NAMASTE NOWHow the different places I’ve lived in have given me comfort when I needed itThe word home brings up so many memories for me. I was born in the winter of 1959 in London, England, and was the firstborn of four children. The first home I lived in was in West London. It was a rambling 3-story Victorian house with 10 bedrooms. Lots of people lived there with me, including my parents, lodgers, and ghosts. I was sensitive to these ghosts from an early age and would often talk to them.

A place where educators use their expertise to become creatorsHow schools’ and parents’ obsessions with pigeonholing teachers drove me away from teaching in a schoolSome people believe that there are good teachers and bad teachers. Their rationale goes a bit like this. “Good teachers have a personality that students respond to well. They always teach well.”“The bad teachers lose control of their classes, and most students in their class are not interested in what they teach.

Some ways I used to help learners who had learning issues to improve their learningI’ve been a teacher for over 30 years. How I worked with a student to build self-confidence and resilienceI’ve worked in schools where a few students have almost hidden learning difficulties. They are quiet, and they sit and listen and take notes well. Their test and exam results are usually not what they or their parents hoped for. These students didn’t always ask for help, and if they did, the help they got wasn’t always what they needed.

Why it’s so difficult to know how a student is doing even after a testI used to work in large secondary schools, teaching children aged 11 to 18 maths. Roughly every six weeks I was asked to provide data on how each child was doing. I had to input a grade, which I got from a test the student had done a week or so before, and I also had to input an effort grade.
