An Allegheny County mortician accused of defrauding dog and cat owners of their pets’ funerals waived his right to a preliminary hearing in court Friday. Patrick Roy Vereb Sr., 70, formerly of New Castle, is facing criminal charges filed April 28 for reportedly disposing of thousands of pets in a landfill or having them cremated and returning random ashes to customers after they paid him for the burial or cremation services for their dogs and cats.

New Castle police are investigating the death of a 20-year-old man who was shot in his home Sunday in Mahoningtown. Police Chief David Cumo said Jalin Clark of Second Street was shot in the neck. He was taken by ambulance to UPMC Jameson Hospital, which was preparing to fly him to a trauma center, but he died at the hospital. Cumo said the police are continuing to probe the circumstances surrounding Clark’s death. He was shot with a handgun, he said.

The suspect in a drive-by shooting that injured four Monday in Sharon might have ended up in New Castle this week. New Castle police Chief David Cumo said police in Sharon were looking for a vehicle they believe was involved in the incident, and New Castle police found the vehicle abandoned on Park Avenue on New Castle’s North Hill.
