IN HEALY PARK, Omagh, a working journalist has their pick of two very different options. You can go across the pitch from the main stand and take your place in the rather futuristic setting of their elevated, purpose-built media facility. There is ample elbow room. Power points abound. Occasionally, occasionally, there is the chance of sandwiches. There’s a convenient jacks. There’s a snag though. The sun sets over the main stand, so you find yourself squinting out of the greenhouse.

GIVEN THE RIOTOUS nature of the first two rounds of the All-Ireland football round-robin series, it’s only natural that the delegates to Congress may be feeling a little regret that as of next year, the format will be scrapped and replaced with a double trapdoor/backdoor/reverse ferret system. But for now, we are looking at a final weekend of football fixtures with more cliffhangers than an EastEnders omnibus.

WE GIVE UP. We really do. You can spend your time weighing up the pros and cons, strengths and weaknesses, variables and measurables. You can examine how a manager having to step away for health reasons might unsettle a camp. And how a loss to a side that would be have been seen as the banker in the group could see confidence plummet to record lows.

IN A WEEK when they lost their manager and a fortnight since what was expected to be their ‘gimme’ win of their group 1 round robin, Mayo reached deep into themselves to revive hopes they would go deeper into the All-Ireland race by comprehensively dominating Tyrone. The Red Hands looked to be suffering the horrors of a Ballybofey hangover as they never got to the pitch of this game, seven days after they took a chunk out of a Donegal side that many were tipping for Sam Maguire.

MAO SAIGO TOOK aim at a second straight major title on Friday, firing a six-under-par 66 to grab a three-shot lead over a group including world number one Nelly Korda after two rounds of the US Women’s Open in Wisconsin. Japan’s Saigo, who won a five-way playoff to lift her first major trophy at the Chevron Championship, shrugged off a spectacular piece of bad luck to build a 36-hole total of eight-under par at Erin Hills.

What a great man, and special moment for Hannah.

Had a special visitor tonight. Ryan Burns is my sister Hannah’s favourite player (and maybe person?!) and he very graciously popped up to say hello and show Hannah the Delaney Cup. Never has a person been so happy to get dragged out of bed at 10pm. Thanks Ryan! https://t.co/6YJqdGcFiy
