    The families of Head Start were treated to free turkeys by the family and friends of Brent Purvis, who was tragically killed in July 2022, on Thursday afternoon. Purvis was the leader of the Troop Gang, who were actively involved in community and school activities in Huntsville and the north Houston area. Purvis was also a rapper, known as “NevaNervous BP and Troop BP.” He had performed in Crockett, Madisonville, Houston, Huntsville, Spring and several other cities, to sold out crowds.

    The Huntsville Community Hospital Foundation celebrated their first golf tournament Sept. 16, with “Golf for the Girls” Charity Golf Tournament at the Elkins Lake Golf Course. Nancy King, a local resident, and friend of the foundation organized the successful tournament. “We are raising funds to provide free mammograms for women in our community who are uninsured or underinsured,” said King.

    The legacy of Samuel Walker Houston (1864-1945) and his father Joshua Houston (1822-1902) was celebrated during the bi-annual Sam Houston High School Alumni Reunion July 18-21. The four days of events allowed old friends to reconnect and make new memories. The outside 5-foot display at the SW Houston Culture Center and Museum, designed by Kijana Wiseman, reminds everyone how interconnected the Huntsville community is with Samuel W. Houston and his family.

    On Sunday evening, the pastors and members of First Missionary Baptist Church and their sister church First Baptist Church joined together to offer up prayers for the students and staff at Samuel Walker Houston Elementary School. The pastors Dr. Jason Bay, FBC, and Otis l. Cunningham, FMBC, and several members prayed for a successful school year for all the students and their families in the community. The Assistant Principal expressed his appreciation for the great turnout and encouragement.
