Huntsville Item

The Huntsville Item is a morning newspaper that serves the community of Huntsville, Texas, and is published five days a week. It covers the entire Walker County area, which is nestled in the beautiful piney woods of East Texas. Established in 1850, The Item claims the title of the second oldest newspaper still in circulation in Texas. Notably, it continued to publish throughout the Civil War from 1861 to 1865, unlike The Daily News in Galveston. Originally owned by the Woodall family, the newspaper has changed hands several times over the years. The current owner, Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc. (CNHI), acquired it in 1999. Beyond its daily publication, The Item also runs a commercial printing division that produces The Houstonian, the student newspaper of Sam Houston State University, and The Battalion, the publication for Texas A&M University.
