America has a long, proud history of borrowing from other cultures. Some in the form of old colonialism, some as part of the so-called “melting pot” of American culture. Land, ideas, words, and traditions all fall victim to the American poaching at one point or another. And it is so quintessentially American for us to try to fix the political and social divide in our country using a strategy developed for another problem in another country.

If there’s one thing about me, it’s that I never stop talking. I have strong opinions about almost everything under the sun, and I’m proud of that. I defend myself and my community using any platform I can use to speak out. And somehow, after 19 years of never shutting up, I just had my first encounter with someone leading a conversation that I didn’t know how to approach. Our table was adorned with stickers of pride symbols, and the main centerpiece was a full-sized pride flag.

For students, a new year means new friends, new classes, new homework, and inevitably, new stress. But it also means a new system of support provided by Student Success and the Wellness Center. The BVU wellness team is focused on a multi-faceted approach to mental health resources for students this year. For students looking for in-person support, there are a few people they can turn to. Whitney Gray is the Licensed Mental Health Counselor on campus Tuesdays and Fridays.

Hi, my name is Dee Merriman and my pronouns are they/them. I’m a sophomore from Brookings, South Dakota, and I’m double majoring in psychology and digital media.
