Anna Huling was a star Los Angeles fashion designer, creating clothing for the likes of Lauryn Hill and Naomi Campbell, when she was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Not only did it derail her life, but that of her young son, Wesley, and her husband, author Stephen Siciliano. Huling battled the disease for more than a decade with the support of her family, but her condition took its toll on all of them.

The book hits the shelves on May 6. Where did the idea for the novel come from? How did you cook up your protagonist, Emilia? “I started with the event, the civil war in Chile in 1891, and I wanted to tell it from a sort of outsider’s point of view, a narrator that was not in either side of the civil war.
