Juneteenth — combining “June” and “nineteenth” — marks the day, June 19, 1865, that formerly enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned slavery had been abolished. In 2021, Congress designated it a federal holiday.

Seattle Public Schools' chief operations officer will serve as the district's acting superintendent until Sept. 3, a vote by the Seattle Public Schools Board of Directors confirmed Wednesday. Fred Podesta will take over for Superintendent Brent Jones, who has been on medical leave since May. Jones announced in March that he planned to leave the district Sept. 3 and recently sought to extend the leave to his last day.

Seattle Public Schools and the district's teachers union have reached a tentative agreement to extend the current union contract, which is set to expire at the end of August, for another year.
