The launch of a scheme allowing Guangdong residents to drive their own vehicles to Hong Kong has been delayed until December, as mainland Chinese authorities are still ironing out arrangements for the policy, the Post has learned. The “Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicles” scheme, which has been the subject of discussion for several years, was originally expected to start at the end of 2024 or early this year.

Hong Kong airport’s new second terminal will open in stages from September, starting with the debut of a coach hall, as part of the city’s efforts to up its game as an international aviation hub. The Airport Authority said on Monday that the first phase would involve the launch of the terminal’s coach hall – a covered area with 41 parking spaces for limousines, tour buses and resident and cross-boundary coaches. The move means all such existing services will be relocated under the same roof.

Fitch Ratings has maintained Hong Kong’s “AA-” credit rating and “stable” outlook, which the government has said is a reflection of the city’s strong financial position. A government spokesman said on Friday that the unchanged rating and outlook recognised the city’s “large fiscal buffers, robust external finances and a low level of fiscal debt”, as well as the banking sector’s solid funding and liquidity.

The 90-day pause on Sino-US tariffs has caused “daily challenges” for Hong Kong manufacturers, industry veterans have said, revealing they have been receiving unlawful demands from American importers seeking to circumvent levies. Several told the Post that Beijing and Washington’s suspension of tariffs for 90 days from May 14 had given Hong Kong exporters some respite, but they were urgently pressing ahead with plans to diversify their production bases to mitigate geopolitical risks.
