In a press briefing Tuesday, the spokesman for the UN Secretary-General forewarned that Syria’s health system “remains under severe strain,” leaving almost 16 million people in urgent need of humanitarian support amid continued threats posed by explosive remnants of war (ERWs). Stéphane Dujarric and the UN reported that ERWs have caused over 1,000 casualties since November and warned that the nation faces a shortage of essential medicines.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) on Friday warned of a “major offensive” against press freedom in Peru regarding actions by all three branches of government, including legislative reform, judicial harassment, and presidential enactments. RSF said the government’s actions have coincided with the murders of several Peruvian journalists in the first four months of 2025, reaching a level of violence that the country has not seen since 2017.

Foreign ministers from Ukraine, the UK, and several European states announced their support for the establishment of a special tribunal to prosecute Russian officials for the crime of aggression against Ukraine on Friday. The countries in support include at least 37 states alongside Ukraine, and these states will have the power to hold accountable Russian political and military leaders, deriving their jurisdiction from that of Ukraine.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk warned on Friday of the “unremitting violence” being committed against civilians in Myanmar’s ongoing civil war despite an active ceasefire that began in the wake of the March 28 earthquakes. Türk noted that the Myanmar military, or the Tatmadaw, is reported to have launched at least 243 attacks between the earthquake and April 29. These attacks, which included 171 air strikes, have killed over 200 civilians in the country.
