UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk warned on Friday of the “unremitting violence” being committed against civilians in Myanmar’s ongoing civil war despite an active ceasefire that began in the wake of the March 28 earthquakes. Türk noted that the Myanmar military, or the Tatmadaw, is reported to have launched at least 243 attacks between the earthquake and April 29. These attacks, which included 171 air strikes, have killed over 200 civilians in the country.

Women’s rights NGO Equality Now reported on Friday that despite some progress towards legal equality, there has been an “alarming rollback” of fundamental human rights relating to “women’s rights, LGBTQ+ protections, and democratic freedoms” 30 years after the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action was adopted.

Amnesty International denounced Taiwan’s execution of Huang Linkai on Thursday, calling the event a “shameful setback” as it marked the first execution in Taiwan since 2020. Director of Amnesty International Taiwan E-Ling Chiu stated: “The execution of Huang Linkai (黃麟凱) was carried out in violation of constitutional and international safeguards on the use of the death penalty, and while an appeal filed by his lawyer to stop the execution was still pending before the courts.

The US House of Representatives voted Thursday to impose sanctions against foreign persons who have taken part in or aided efforts by the International Criminal Court (ICC) to “investigate, detain, or prosecute” protected persons under US law, which includes government officials of US allies.

The Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China announced the conclusion of an unfair trading practices investigation into the European Union’s Foreign Subsidies Regulation (FSR), concluding that the regulation unreasonably restricts the entry of Chinese companies’ products, services and investments into the EU market, damaging the competitiveness of Chinese companies and their products.
