    THE Government's proposed new Mayor for Suffolk and Norfolk can bring benefits to the region, but local communities must be fairly represented. That's the conclusion of Babergh District Council and Mid Suffolk District Council following full council meetings this week, which both agreed their responses to consultation on the Government's devolution plans.

    SUFFOLK is set to receive more than £9 million in Government funding for special needs care. The Government has announced a £126.6 million funding package to deliver around 1,000 places for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in the East of England. For Suffolk, this equates to about £9.4 million extra in High Needs Funding, the portion of the council's Dedicated Schools Grant (DSG) used to provide additional resources for SEND care delivery.

    TWO or three unitary councils in Suffolk can "transform public services, better serve residents and reflect the needs of local communities", according to councillors at Babergh District Council.  On Thursday evening (20 March), the council overwhelmingly backed an interim plan developed jointly by all of Suffolk's district and borough councils that would see either two or three unitary authorities created to deliver all council services across manageable geographic areas.

    SUFFOLK County Council has been awarded £3.7 million to continue to encourage cycling, walking and active travel across the county, and making journeys more accessible. The Government has awarded the county council £0.9 million from the Round 5 of the Active Travel Fund, and £2.8 million from the Consolidated Active Travel Fund.

    PLANS for a major solar farm on best quality land have attracted close to 200 objections and have been recommended for refusal by planners. Next Wednesday (5 February), members of Babergh's planning committee will be discussing plans submitted by Green Switch Capital for a solar farm on 48.30 hectares of land between Potash Lane and Church Road, in Bentley, near Ipswich.
