Every time I boot up Helldivers 2, I have to remind myself that I’m not playing Starship Troopers: Exterminationwith a third-person camera mod.Technically, the two titles are different from one another, their perspectives notwithstanding. Have you ever bought a game that you thought you would love, and then played it and realised that you hated it? For better or worse, I never have until I booted up War Hospital. Although technically I didn’t purchase it (three cheers for review copies!), it looked like the type of title that I would enjoy and probably put on Jump Dash Roll’s game of the year awards come next January.

Pick the most exciting (or scandalous) camera angles, bleep the swears and determine which ads to run to keep the sponsors happy. No pressure, right? I mean, who pays attention to the news anyway? Not For Broadcast is a darkly comedic game of televised chaos that lets you pick what you want to see on TV, no matter what anybody else wants.

Not to get too political, but I don’t think that civilians dying from bombs and landmines in war is very cool. I get that most people are mindlessly supporting their side of choice in one of 32 ongoing international conflicts, but fact is that when cluster munitions, rockets, airstrikes and booby traps are used in those conflicts, noncombatants die, regardless of which side is using weapons that should and very often are outlawed by treaties.

It boggles my mind that Payday 2 is over a decade old. Although I haven’t spent much time playing it recently, it was the game I enjoyed as a teenager before I got into Arma 3, and one that I still like booting up every now and again to complete heists in virtual reality. However, the only reason I’ve logged 400 hours on it is because I willingly suffered through years of post-launch gameplay reworks, the title’s weird microtransaction phase, and its very buggy launch.

Before we get into this review, I have something to confess: I, an objective games journalist, allowed myself to buy into Starfield’s hype, because even though I technically make money off being an unbiased writer, I live and breathe intelligent science fiction media. Interstellar is my favourite movie of all time, Mass Effect 2 is my favourite game, The Forever War is my favourite book, and Starship Troopers: Exterminationis the title I’ve spent the most time playing as of late.
