Clouds are on the move across Metro Detroit today, gradually filling in as we go. It’s still mild, though — highs near 72 with an east breeze tapping in at 10 to 20 mph, just enough to flutter the flags and rustle the leaves. Tonight, cooler air slides in under the cloud blanket, and after midnight we’ll start picking up some scattered showers. Lows dip to around 55, and it’s the opening act for a damp midweek stretch. Wednesday’s all about the clouds and the drizzle.

It's been a busy year for severe weather in Michigan and tornadoes have been a frequent sighting during the storms. It's still a ways away from the record, but the state has already confirmed five times more than what normally happens. Big picture view: On May 15, late-night severe weather moving across Michigan spawned three tornadoes, depositing them across rural portions of the state. Clouds are thinning out across Metro Detroit today, giving way to more sunshine as the afternoon wears on. But don’t let the brightening skies fool you — it’s still a cooler-than-normal May day, with highs only reaching around 64 degrees. You might want to keep that light jacket handy, especially this evening. Temps dip tonight under partly cloudy skies, falling to a chilly 43 degrees by early morning. We’re not done with the cool pattern just yet.

An influx of migrating birds is expected over Michigan this week. Over the next 48 hours, birdwatchers have a good chance of spotting birds that are headed back up north after the winter, including warblers and Baltimore orioles. This spike in migration is fueled by high pressure moving counterclockwise in the Gulf of Mexico and blowing up toward the Midwest.

Tuesday is expected to be one of the hottest day of 2025 with conditions expected to hit the 80s for the first time of the year. The wind and spotty showers felt earlier in the day will be present later as well. Big picture view: It’s a warm one out there in Southeast Michigan with highs near 82 degrees and just a hint of humidity teasing that summer feel. But don’t get too cozy — this is a day when the weather keeps you guessing.

Frost Advisory just issued for the area tonight! If you planted, cover the plants. If you can bring them into the garage that works too.
