CRANBERRY TWP — Derek Piatek has had a different perspective on the volleyball court the last two games — and a different role to go with it. Normally an outside hitter for Mars’ boys team, the senior suffered a sprained right ankle three weeks ago and missed four games, returning earlier this week to play libero, mostly a defensive position, against Shaler. He was back there again Friday in a 3-0 loss at North Catholic. The position switch took Piatek out of his comfort zone.

JEFFERSON TWP — It will go down as one of the stranger games played this season by Knoch’s softball team. Most importantly, the result was one the Knights have become very familiar with. Knoch did not manage a hit until two outs were gone in the fifth, but erupted for 10 runs between the fifth and sixth innings in an 11-1 defeat of Greensburg Salem at Laura Doerr Park Wednesday afternoon.

Boxing used to be a passion for Michael Miles from afar. “My mom used to order the old pay-per-views, and the whole family would come over to watch,” he said. “I remember watching guys like Mike Tyson, Floyd Mayweather and Brian Minto on TV. Seeing guys putting it all on the line in the ring, I fell in love with it.” That could have been the extent of Miles’ connection with the sport.

BUTLER TWP — The 2025 seven-member induction class of the Butler County Sports Hall of Fame share a number of common traits — and one very important decision made. When opportunity knocked, they answered the door. The group — Joella Baker, Larry Dillon, Joe Lewandowski, Art Monteleone, Tom Phillips, Scott Stoner and Melissa Sopher-Williams — was honored during a banquet at Butler County Community College’s Founders Hall on Saturday.
