As the final quarter of 2024 approaches, I have been reflecting on the past year and the accomplishments within the Texas Society of Architects. A sense of our shared resilience stands out to me! I have never made a public statement about it, but I am proud to be the first African American president in the 85-year history of the Society. The phrase “Heavy is the head that wears the crown” comes to mind, underscoring the substantial responsibility this role entails.

Driving is something I really dislike, and anyone who knows me can attest to that. I grew up in a rural area of America, where I had access to the basic necessities and a few luxuries. To get quality healthcare, entertainment, and education beyond K-12, we had to drive for at least an hour from our remote location. Nowadays, in Texas and other parts of the country, being remote is more of a choice.

Meandering through the alleys and streets of Charleston, South Carolina, one may overlook a detail often missed by both residents and tourists. Intertwined in the fine ornamental ironwork, there might be a forged, lifelike figure of tarpon, sandpiper, or other creation. More than 600 of these art pieces are installed as operational iron gates, fences, balconies, and window grills that adorn the city from end to end.

Some of my fondest childhood memories are from the fishing excursions that I took with my dad, grandfather, and their extended group of brethren. I remember one specific trip where we hiked the dense low-country swampland of South Carolina to get to a premier honey hole of a fishing spot. My grandfather’s cousin by marriage was our guide, and his sole responsibility was to mark the trail so we could find our way out.
