In early June, I made my way to Washington, DC, for the AIA Conference on Architecture & Design. Though I’ve had the privilege to travel and work internationally, this was my first trip to our nation’s capital, a journey marked by a deep sense of intellectual and cultural exchange.

On May 2, IKEA US unveiled a prototype of a permanent supportive housing unit (Small Home) at IKEA Live Oak. The home was designed by San Antonio-based firm WestEast Design Group’s Social Impact Studio with ARUP, using the principles of trauma-informed design, an empathy-based approach to creating spaces that consider the needs of individuals who have experienced trauma and that that support healing and promote overall well-being.

Packed with people, panels, and protests, this year’s iteration of Austin’s signature spring festival, SXSW, continued to spotlight society’s most pressing issues, including the future of design through the lenses of accessibility, community building, and sustainability. The event took place March 8–16, with more than 300,000 people from across the globe gathering to learn from and engage with industry leaders in tech, film, music, design, and culture.

The concept of “third places” was one our TxA Publications Committee latched onto early and enthusiastically in our planning for this new year. Though introduced by sociologist Ray Oldenburg in his 1989 book “The Great Good Place,” the term was new for some committee members, and a concept that clearly resonated at an essential level. It describes the public spaces we inhabit together as a community, distinct from our first places (home) and second places (work).
