Exciting new changes are afoot. Next year will mark Texas Architect’s 75th year of production. To celebrate this significant milestone, we will be launching a new magazine design, one that continues to document the outstanding architectural work and creative thought being done in our state. This new iteration of Texas Architect has been a long time in the making.

In early June, I made my way to Washington, DC, for the AIA Conference on Architecture & Design. Though I’ve had the privilege to travel and work internationally, this was my first trip to our nation’s capital, a journey marked by a deep sense of intellectual and cultural exchange.

On May 2, IKEA US unveiled a prototype of a permanent supportive housing unit (Small Home) at IKEA Live Oak. The home was designed by San Antonio-based firm WestEast Design Group’s Social Impact Studio with ARUP, using the principles of trauma-informed design, an empathy-based approach to creating spaces that consider the needs of individuals who have experienced trauma and that that support healing and promote overall well-being.

Packed with people, panels, and protests, this year’s iteration of Austin’s signature spring festival, SXSW, continued to spotlight society’s most pressing issues, including the future of design through the lenses of accessibility, community building, and sustainability. The event took place March 8–16, with more than 300,000 people from across the globe gathering to learn from and engage with industry leaders in tech, film, music, design, and culture.
