The Department of Health and Human Services stepped in after multiple audits found unsafe conditions and too few staff at the facility. There were just nine detention officers to supervise more than 140 inmates.

Gov. Josh Stein is creating a new council to focus on student safety and well-being. The first priority: Cellphone use in classrooms. Stein announced the new initiative Monday during a visit to Moore Square Middle School. “This has a specific charge of coming up with recommended policies for school systems to adopt as it related to making schools cellphone-free zones,” Stein said. The group will include legislators, school leaders, mental health professionals and public safety officers.

WRAL meteorologists say this year will mark the earliest temperatures have reached 90 degrees in almost 35 years. As Dreamville organizers prepare for the festival, so are medical professionals. Wake County EMS will have three medical tents set up throughout the festival: one in the center, one at the north end and another at the south end. Additionally, about 75 medical personnel will navigate crowds, with additional help from Durham, Harnett and Guilford counties.

Within the last two weeks, two companies sued Saint Augustine’s University for not paying its bills. These lawsuits, filed about a week apart, total more than $18 million. They come about a month after St. Aug’s accreditation was revoked because it could not prove financial stability and proper oversight. IT company Avaria alleges that the historically Black university has paid some, but not all, of its bills dating back to 2020.
