MHz XPCI at EuXFEL has been pioneered and implemented at the scientific instrument SPB/SFX (Mancuso et al., 2019; Vagovič et al., 2019). The SPB/SFX instrument was primarily designed to study structures of biological molecules and single particles using serial femtosecond X-ray crystallography (Wiedorn et al., 2018; Grünbein et al., 2018; Yefanov et al., 2019) or single-particle imaging (Sobolev et al., 2020; Ayyer et al., 2021).

The growth of serial crystallography at synchrotron and X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) sources has led to an increase in the volume of crystallographic data (Chapman et al., 2011). The large size of these data sets poses challenges for fast and efficient analysis, which must be overcome to enable real-time data analysis and effectively manage XFEL experiments.

Synchrotron beamlines need continuous realignment of optical elements, since noise and vibrations cannot be ignored for accurate measurements. Additionally, different requirements for a variety of experiments call for different experimental setups, thus realignment is crucial.
