Canard cascading (CC) is observed in dynamical networks with global adaptive coupling. It is a slow-fast phenomenon characterized by a recurrent sequence of fast transitions between distinct and slowly evolving quasistationary states. In this Letter, we uncover the dynamical mechanisms behind CC, using an illustrative example of globally and adaptively coupled semiconductor lasers, where CC represents sequential switching on and off the lasers.

MHz XPCI at EuXFEL has been pioneered and implemented at the scientific instrument SPB/SFX (Mancuso et al., 2019; Vagovič et al., 2019). The SPB/SFX instrument was primarily designed to study structures of biological molecules and single particles using serial femtosecond X-ray crystallography (Wiedorn et al., 2018; Grünbein et al., 2018; Yefanov et al., 2019) or single-particle imaging (Sobolev et al., 2020; Ayyer et al., 2021).

HEPES, DPBS, penicillin/streptomycin, gentamycin, and amphotericin B were manufactured by Biowest (Nuaillé, France). Ethanol, BSA, formaldehyde, xylol, hemalum solution acid according to Mayer, eosin Y, and ROTI Histokitt II were obtained from Carl Roth (Karlsruhe, Germany). Other reagents were acquired from Sigma-Aldrich (St. Louis, MO, USA) unless stated otherwise. Cultivation media are modifications of a protocol previously published by our group for ALI-BOEC cultivation [35].
