The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has decided to allot the two seats famously known as the ‘MS Dhoni seats’ to its scholarship students who have represented Mumbai in under-16 to under-19 cricket. A year ago, the MCA had decided to name the seat after former India captain MS Dhoni, who took India past the finish line in the 2011 World Cup final against Sri Lanka with his trademark helicopter shot off Nuwan Kulasekara’s bowling. The ball had landed in the MCA Pavilion.

A few days after he was removed as assistant coach of the Indian team, Abhishek Nayar is all set to join Kolkata Knight Riders as one of the support staff. Nayar had earlier worked for KKR and was their main man behind the scenes, taking care of grooming players in the academy. As previously reported by this newspaper, the batting group’s continued failures in Test cricket at home and abroad had put the spotlight on Nayar’s role.

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has made it ‘mandatory’ for all their Indian players to take part in their T20 Mumbai League. The MCA has also decided to make India’s ODI and Test captain – Rohit Sharma as their ‘Face of the League’. The Indian Express understands that all current Indian players including Ajinkya Rahane, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube, Prithvi Shaw, Shardul Thakur have been informed that if they are not picked for England tour, they have to play the league.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has removed two of its coaching staff — assistant coach Abhishek Nayar and fielding coach T Dilip with immediate effect. Alongside the two, strength and conditioning coach Soham Desai is also on the way out with the men’s team set to have a new masseur as well going into the tour of England in June. The Indian Express understands that the BCCI took the decision on the back of the team’s performance in Australia, where they lost the Test series 1-3.

At the start of this IPL season, South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada echoed a key concern voiced by many about the lack of balance between bat and ball in T20 cricket. With teams pushing to cross the 300-run mark, he said that if the trend continued, the game should be called “batting” not “cricket”. The BCCI is now moving to strike a balance. Going ahead, every IPL batsman will have to pass the bat through a gauge before taking guard.
