Gifford Street between Goodwill Park and Brick Kiln Road is down to one lane so it can be paved. Drivers heading north, or away from downtown, are allowed to continue using Gifford. Others are directed to seek alternate routes. Lawrence-Lynch, the firm conducting the work, which started Monday, June 23, is expected to finish by the end of the day.

The Falmouth Public Library's main building on Main Street closed at 11 AM Monday, after the air conditioning broke down. The department of public works is actively repairing the system. Library director Brian J. Stokes said the main library is about 90 degrees indoors. Once the building hits 85 degrees, employees are contractually sent home. Stokes said he hopes the building will be open tomorrow, as public works gave an estimated six hour timeline for the fix, but there is no guarantee.

The Select Board will send a letter to the Massachusetts congressional delegation, detailing its concerns with the federal government’s enforcement of immigration law. The board resolved to ask the delegation also to work on fixing American immigration law to help curb what the board sees as improper enforcement on the part of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency. Town Manager Michael Renshaw will draft the letter in advance of the board’s meeting on June 30.

The Steamship Authority reached contractual agreements with 280 employees ahead of the summer season, which started this week. The agreements are between the SSA and Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association (MEBA) as well two agreements with Teamsters Union Local No. 59. The employees include about 60 licensed engineering officers, 60 captains, pilots and mates, and 160 deck department employees. The SSA finalized the agreement in its board of governors meeting on Tuesday, June 17.

The Select Board this week voted to send a letter to the Steamship Authority demanding that it cease its 5:30 AM freight ferry in Woods Hole. The board also voted to back an effort to impose term limits for representatives serving on the SSA’s Board of Governors. The effort to put an end to the early morning ferry has become a recurring theme at the Select Board. However, this year’s letter offers language stronger than in the past, and says the SSA lacks empathy for the Woods Hole community.
