The M/V Aquinnah, one of three newly purchased Steamship Authority ferries, will start its work in Cape waters next Friday, May 16. The Aquinnah, currently en route from the Gulf of Mexico, will be running between Oak Bluffs and Woods Hole. On May 16, an open house will be held at the Woods Hole terminal from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM for anyone interested in touring the new ferry.

Cultural council chairwoman Alice B. Kociemba was before the select board on April 28, promoting the idea of creating a state-designated cultural district in town. She said the application process with the Massachusetts Cultural Council begins July 1. Ms. Kociemba, who had been before the board in August pitching the same idea, said creating a cultural district could have wide economic benefits for the community at a relatively small cost.

The short-term rental advisory committee officially has enough members to begin its work. The select board unanimously appointed Kara D. Foley, a licensed real estate agent from Teaticket, to the committee this week. With Ms. Foley’s appointment, the committee has four of what will be seven members, which means it has a quorum appointed, and can begin meeting and planning. The select board is expected to name three more appointees in future meetings.

The US DOGE Service reported that it canceled $48,575 in grant funding for an arctic education study conducted by Woodwell Climate Research Center in Woods Hole. On its website, the so-called Department of Government Efficiency lists the grant among thousands of other similarly fated grants nationwide. The original grant totaled $99,403. Per federal reporting, Woodwell received more than half of the grant before it was canceled.
