JACKSON COUNTY, Ill. (KFVS) - A popular southern Illinois fishing spot is well into the process of being drained. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, it’s part of a two-year process to evaluate and rehabilitate the Little Grassy Lake Dam and Spillway. The water may be lower than folks are used to, but Justin Sexton with the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge said Little Grassy Lake is still open for kayakers and fishing. “We were down about 28 feet before this last rain event.

Village Caregiving and the Floyd County Family Resource Centers are set to host the second Military Appreciation Night on April 24, at Floyd Central High School’s gymnasium. Teresa Griffith, Floyd Central Youth Service Center coordinator, said the event's purpose is exactly as it sounds. “It’s just a way for us to celebrate our veterans, active duty and newly-enlisted, as well as their families,” she said.

It’s already happened a few times this year: as I’ve been in the yard, feeding the dog, working on a vehicle or whatever, a gobble has sounded off in the distance. Just like the previous years of living at the residence, my mouth is watering as I don’t have permission to hunt the area, yet, the distant echoes let me know that spring is here, and thus, turkey season. Many would argue (for good reason) that turkey hunting is more of an adrenaline rush than anything on the market.

During the City of Allen’s regularly scheduled meeting on April 7, the city council discussed advertising for and filling a couple of vacant positions within the city. Council member Eilene Kinzer discussed the vacant police officer position, which she said was posted on April 2. “We’d like to hire a new officer, to have that presence in the community,” she said.

In a media release from Floyd County Schools on April 2, Jeremy Hall was announced as the new principal of Floyd Central High School. Hall, who has served the district for roughly 25 years, began his career close by at Allen Central Middle School. “When I left there, I went to Allen Central High School and coached football for around 15 years,” he said. Around the time the high school closed in 2017, Hall said he completed his training to be a principal.
