The hearts of Kentucky hunters are mourning a little this morning, as the spring turkey season officially came to an end as the sun rose and darkness fell on the evening of May 4th. Having had the opportunity to roam these hills a handful of times this season, I can’t complain one bit, as it was, and always is, amazing. I’ve talked with those who tagged out with two birds, and I’ve spoken with those who chased these mountain toms for weeks and were unable to fill a tag.

The Mountain Arts Center hosted the Green Dot Youth Summit on April 30. State Auditor of Public Accounts and Prestonsburg native Allison Ball was the keynote speaker, telling high school juniors and seniors from Floyd and Martin counties about her journey to serving in her current role. Additional speakers, from various organizations around the surrounding communities, spoke as well.

The Floyd County Department of Community Based Services (DCBS) hosted their annual “Fun in the Park” child abuse awareness event on April 26 at Minnie Ball Park. Frankie Branham, a social service clinician within the department, led the charge in organizing the event. “Every year, usually in January, we begin making preparations for this event: our annual child abuse awareness event,” she said.
