WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill. (KFVS) - It’s been one month since a devastating EF4 tornado destroyed nearly 40 homes and structures in Williamson County. Williamson County officials say significant progress has been made in the recovery efforts since the EF4 devastated a residential community on the south side of Marion. However, it’s still estimated to take several years before everything can return to normal.

Ernestine Hall, mayor of Allen, says she is taking steps to have a bridge within the city inspected, as she believes it could be unsafe for the residents of Allen. “I’ve got the state department coming in to check the bridge past the old school building, to make sure it’s safe,” she said. “I could see the rebar through it, and it made me uncomfortable. I have citizens who live across that bridge.

CARBONDALE, Ill. (KFVS) - There’s a new place to play for kids in Carbondale. The city celebrated the opening of a revamped Attucks Park on Thursday. Carbondale native Daffney Glasco said this new playground at Attucks Park is a huge investment for the community. “It’s been something that we’ve needed for at least 10 years. I think it’s not just for the kids. It’s for all families because they feel welcome, validated, and heard. They’re gonna feel safe here,” said Glasco.

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill. (KFVS) - Two Williamson County men are being hailed as heroes after they saved a suicidal woman on Crab Orchard Lake. Brayden Edwards and Zach Wagner were working on some jet ski equipment near the west-end boat ramp on Crab Orchard Lake back on May 27. That’s when they noticed a woman face down in the water.

SALINE COUNTY Ill. (KFVS) - A Saline County nonprofit dedicated to fighting hunger is celebrating some exciting changes. Heaven’s Kitchen in Harrisburg transitioned to a fully functional food pantry last month. The organization is operated by the Fowler-Bonan Foundation, and executive director Amy Oxford says being able to give folks a full bag of groceries with enough food for multiple meals has proven more beneficial than the once-a-week hot meal that was served before.
