Antiviral actions only when infected through ACE2Macrophages are critical first responders to infection but are also implicated in driving severe inflammation, particularly in patients with SARS-CoV-2. Because relatively few lung-resident macrophages have the putative SARS-CoV-2 receptor ACE2, Labzin et al. explored its role in the response of these cells to viral infection.

A role for MICU1 in mitochondrial morphologyThe folding of the inner mitochondrial membrane into cristae is important for cellular energetics and several mitochondrial functions. Tomar et al. discovered that the Ca2+-binding protein MICU1, which is best known for its role in regulating the mitochondrial Ca2+ uniporter channel (MCU), also modulates cristae architecture. MICU1 promoted the assembly of the MICOS complex, which is critical for cristae ultrastructure.
