The heated campaign period had revived concerns about unrest as political rivals clashed, sometimes violently. The West African nation saw some of the worst political violence in recent history ahead of the presidential election in March.

Dakar — Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has urged supporters of the ruling Pastef party to take revenge for alleged violence against them during the campaign for a parliamentary election this Sunday, raising concern among rights groups. Supporters of the prime minister, who is also president of Pastef, clashed with police before a presidential election in March in some of the worst unrest in Senegal’s history.

Senegal has raised $300 million on the international financial market to cover financing requirements for the 2024 budget after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) postponed disbursements for the West African country, its finance ministry said on Wednesday. After an audit revealed that the country's debt and budget deficit were much wider than the previous administration had reported, the government decided not to go ahead with Senegal's request for an IMF disbursement.
