(Reuters) -The commanding win of junta leader Brice Oligui Nguema in Gabon's presidential election over the weekend gives him a seven-year mandate to turn the page on more than half a century of father-and-son rule by the Bongo family. The 50-year-old - who ousted President Ali Bongo in a 2023 coup, then ran for office - will now have to deliver on pledges to diversify an oil-reliant economy and end corruption.

By Gerauds Wilfried Obangome and Ngouda DioneLIBREVILLE (Reuters) -Brice Oligui Nguema, who led a coup in Gabon in August 2023, won Saturday's presidential election with 90.35% of votes cast, according to provisional results, the Central African country's interior minister said on Sunday. The result cements Nguema's grip on power 19 months after the coup ended more than half a century of rule by the Bongo family in Gabon, an oil producer with a population of around 2.5 million.

Thiaroye, SenegalReutersSenegal on Sunday commemorated the 80th anniversary of a massacre of African soldiers who fought for France during World War II, and were gunned down by French troops in 1944 for demanding fair treatment and payment on their return. The West African country has long demanded its former coloniser take responsibility, officially apologise and properly investigate the massacre that took place in Thiaroye, a fishing village on the outskirts of Senegalโs capital Dakar.
