I’m thrilled to announce that veteran journalist Rafael Carranza — who grew up and spent the past decade reporting in our home state — has joined our Arizona Luminaria team full time in partnership with the ProPublica Local Reporting Network. Rafael will collaborate with Arizona Luminaria editors as well as ProPublica editors and specialized teams on investigations for three years while based in Tucson.

En 2008, Erika empezó a organizarse con un grupo de inmigrantes que se iniciaban en el activismo. Juntos crearon una comunidad para hacer frente a las leyes antiinmigrantes de Arizona. Empezó a reunirse con Carmen Cornejo, Luis Ávila, Daniel Rodríguez y otros migrantes para contarse sus historias. “Para mí, honestamente, fue un momento de empoderamiento”, dijo Erika, reconociendo la lucha de sus compañeros inmigrantes de Arizona.

Reyna recalled that discussing immigration in schools was fraught: “We had to live in the shadows. That fear was very real and present.” And she added how it all began with the support of other young people: “They just encouraged me. They told me, ‘You speak up. It seems like you want to be a leader.’”That was how she discovered the power of words and the strength of community, and realized that activism boosts self-esteem. She built support networks that helped her and other students move forward.
