Palatine’s bats woke up just in time Thursday. The Pirates, who pounded out 32 hits in their last three games, found themselves with just three after five innings at home against Wheeling. To matters even worse, Palatine trailed a spirited Wildcat team 6-1. Then the eruption took place. Palatine spurted its own lava with hits that turned into a 9-run sixth inning as the Pirates rallied for a 10-6 win over Wheeling.

With the Prospect fans singing “Staying Alive” at times Wednesday in Mt. Prospect , the Knights did just that. Prospect spotted Hersey a 5-0 lead. But Prospect reliever Dominic Graf shut the door on the Huskies and the Knights rallied for a 10-9 win. Despite being just the second Mid Suburban League game for both teams, It was a much needed win for Prospect (7-4-1, 1-1) over Hersey in the MSL East race. That’s because Hersey had knocked off Prospect 9-7 on Monday.

Prospect grabbed a stogie Saturday. Prospect opened up the 2025 outdoor boys track and field season with a full effort at the 34th annual Mike Stokes “ Stogie” relays in Mt. Prospect. The Knights won 7 of the 19 special relay events to win the title with a score of 161. Prospect finished just in front of Barrington, which was second with a 152, Hersey was third with a 124, followed by Huntley’s 64 in the 9-team event. All 17 events had individual winners.

Overcast, windy, 40 degrees. It was baseball weather that only a Midwesterner could barely love Thursday. St. Viator and host Lake Zurich battled through the seven full innings of baseball with St. Viator outlasting the Bears 11-6. “It doesn’t get much worse than this,” said St. Viator coach Terry Beyna, who picked up his 401st career win. “It was back and forth early in the game. I think the weather in the Midwest, there is just an element that baseball players have to be tough. And this is why.

Palatine’s Brodie Piecuch may have set up the Pirates for another MSL West title. Piecuch, who plays set, scored a career-best six goals Wednesday as Palatine knocked off host Barrington 12-8. Palatine (7-1, 2-0) now has wins over Barrington and Schaumburg in West play. “We are hungry and hopeful again this year,” said Palatine coach Joe Grzybek, whose team has won the MSL West and the MSL title game the last three seasons.

One final thought: Kerry Wood Field is a great facility, but how is it possible that the scoreboard never works (at least when I’ve been there)? Long past time to fix it.
