Home Affairs says it has noted the release of the Nigerian national televangelist, Timothy Omotoso by the East London Regional Court. Omotoso appeared in the court on charges related to contravention of the Immigration Act, following his arrest on Saturday in the East London CBD. He was released because the Department of Home Affairs did not follow correct procedures, as he was supposed to be brought to court within 48 hours of his arrest which expired at 7am on Monday.

South African Police Services (SAPS) Forensic Analyst, warrant officer Sunette Nel has told the High Court in Pietermaritzburg that she believes former African National Congress (ANC) president Chief Albert Luthuli was assaulted on his way between his shop and the Gledo train station. Nel, working with the investigating team, conducted a simulation of the accident scene in the re-opened inquest into Luthuli’s death. Luthuli died in 1967 after being reportedly hit by a goods train in Groutville.

Eskom has announced that it will be implementing stage two power cuts from 4pm this afternoon until 10pm on Thursday evening. The power utility says the decision is due to a delay in the return of generation units, as well as a couple of unplanned breakdowns. Eskom spokesperson Daphne Mokwena says the set backs have impacted their operational performance but the system is in a significantly stronger position than in past winters.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) is urging motorists to remain calm after the Department of Transport confirmed another breakdown of South Africa’s only driving license card printer. It is reported that the machine breaks down frequently, contributing to a growing backlog of driver’s licenses still waiting to be printed. In the meantime, JMPD is advising drivers to hold on to their expired licenses and apply for a temporary one, as delays in card printing continue nationwide.
