Under a scorching sun last Saturday, 14-year-old Tala Mahmoud was waiting in a food distribution line to secure a dish of lentils for her family in the displaced persons’ camp in the al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis. Then, chaos. In minutes, Israeli war planes dropped a reported five 2,000 pound bombs on the area – an area the Israeli military had designated a “safe zone,” and which was filled with people who had been forcibly displaced from elsewhere in Gaza.

A moment later, he heard shelling and a series of missiles being dropped on particular locations. Fire belts – as they are known in Gaza. As he tried to calm down his children, Samer asked Rehab, his wife, to grab some essentials so that they could flee their home in Nuseirat refugee camp. They did not have time to do so. Suddenly, Israeli soldiers attacked his house.

Inside the infant nursery of the Emirati Maternity hospital in Rafah, 5-month-old Yahya cried as a nurse tried to soothe him. Some 40 kilometers away in the Jabaliya camp in northern Gaza, his mother, Sondos Hamouda, also cried — for the baby she is unable to see because of the presence of the Israeli military. Yahya was born on 27 November, two months premature. The sounds of bombings and explosions and the roar of war planes overhead in Gaza made his mother’s already difficult delivery harder.

Salem Baraka has seen the kind of horror no parent should ever have to endure: The Israeli military killed his son Karim right in front of him. Like so many others, Salem and Karim fled from their home in Jabaliya refugee camp, northern Gaza, during the current genocidal war. They took shelter at al-Shifa, Gaza’s largest hospital. They were inside the hospital when it was stormed by Israeli forces on 18 March.

Life took an unexpected turn for 33-year-old Doha Ahmed, after the Israeli war on Gaza uprooted her from her once-secure life, home, and family. She now lives as a displaced person in one of the UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency) schools at the Nuseirat camp in central Gaza. Doha struggles with the lack of basic necessities, and faces numerous challenges, particularly those related to her needs as a woman.
