IntroductionWelfare is a contested and morally loaded concept — it concerns how we think people live and how we should live (Daly 2011). The welfare concept originated and is mostly used in wealthier and highly industrialized regions of the world. This raises questions about how it applies to the so-called Global South (Dean 2011), or whether the welfare concept is even useful in overcoming Western-centric perspectives in migration studies.

AbstractThe broad and substantial educational harm caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has motivated large federal, state, and local investments in academic recovery. However, the success of these efforts depends in part on students’ regular school attendance. Using state-level data, I show that the rate of chronic absenteeism among US public-school students grew substantially as students returned to in-person instruction.

SignificanceWe find that public school enrollments of different race/ethnicity groups responded differently to COVID schooling policies. Specifically, we find that non-White populations were more likely to disenroll from districts offering in-person schooling in fall 2020. This is consistent with the fact that communities of color faced greater risks from COVID and report less trust in medical and social institutions.

Most cases reported previously involve indirect regulation of plant viruses to wing dimorphism of insect vectors through host plants. Here, we revealed that a plant virus directly induces a long-winged morph in male insect vectors.
