Hockey and curling aren’t subjects you typically see played out in storylines on stage in live theatre performances. After all, the ice component or environment is obviously difficult to replicate. But the Chemainus Theatre staff is never one to stand on its laurels or play it safe. Anything and everything is fair game and this latest production is a fine example.

Air. It’s everywhere, but you can’t see it. Air is also everywhere in an upcoming Chemainus art exhibit by Skye Skagfeld, but you can see it in her interpretive paintings. Air is the latest featured element in Skagfeld’s regular quarterly shows at the Skye Gallery in the St. Joseph’s Artist Studios that formerly housed St. Joseph’s Catholic School on Elm Street. The exhibit will be open one day only on Thursday, March 21 from 11 a.m.-8 p.m., just after the official 2024 spring equinox March 20.

There’s a fine line between fact and fiction in Joanna Vander Vlugt’s writing. That’s because the Chemainus author and illustrator uses personal work experience and also incorporates the significance of world events into the plot while crafting her stories. Vander Vlugt, who turns 58 later this month, has just released her third novel, Spy Girls. It’s another thriller that follows in the same vein as her debut novel, The Unravelling, and subsequent book Dealer’s Child.

The Chemainus Valley Historical Society is inviting the public to an evening of memories and stories at the Chemainus Valley Museum. The ‘Memories Unveiled’ event will provide the stories beyond the murals. “The whole idea behind this is it’s a fundraiser and just making people more aware,” said Ron Waller, who assumed the role of president following the society’s annual general meeting Feb. 21. Tickets for the Saturday, March 16 event are $25 each, available by calling 250-246-2445.

It’s never easy to determine the right time to leave a profession that’s been such a big part of your life for 44 years. But, after much consideration, the time for me is now. This is my last issue as editor of the Chemainus Valley Courier. I am retiring as of Friday, March 15. By the way, for those who are wondering, my departure has absolutely nothing to do with the pending sale of Black Press Media after owner David Black announced his retirement recently. It’s purely coincidental.
