That’s not a serious question in the title, right? It’s not as if there’s any clear delineation between those age categories – you aren’t young one day and middle-aged the next, for example. But still, when we read novels written a long time ago and someone is called middle-aged, we have a pretty good impression in our minds about what that person is like. And we probably still carry in our minds those old-fashioned ideas about what ages fit into which range.

Confronted by news headlines about the inflation challenge and the battle to bring it under control, reasonable Australians may question both the logic of the proposed monetary policy settings of the RBA and the benign response of the Commonwealth Government. The rhetoric in the RBA policy suggests that it intends to push interest rates higher and move our economy to the brink, but not into a recession.

On 24 May 2023, Howard Marks spoke by video to MBA students at INSEAD’s Fontainebleau campus outside Paris. Marks is a pioneer of distressed debt investing as an asset class and in 1995, he founded Oaktree Capital Management, where he is now Co-Chairman of a firm with over 1,000 employees globally and more than US$170 billion assets under management. Marks has written two books and is best known for his client memos published since 1990 (free to subscribe).
