Will Taylor has a bright future in baseball. Right now, in my humble opinion, Konnor Griffin is the best-known Marauder this season, and for very good reasons. Forty-six games into his initial Florida State League season, the Pirates’ top draft pick last year is dominating at a level not seen in Southwest Florida baseball in a long time. Griffin’s offense is on fire; an inferno of the highest degree. 60 hits, 10 doubles, eight home runs, 29 RBIs, 25 stolen bases, and hitting .317.

One day, Renny Duarte could be elevated to the position of pitching coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Spending a few minutes with Duarte prior to a Marauders’ home game is a treat. Confidence oozes from every sentence the Venezuelan speaks about the nuances of pitching. The experience he’s picked up around the globe on baseball makes him uniquely qualified to teach.

Andrew McCutchen knows how to lift his teammates’ confidence. Heading into Wednesday night’s home game against the visiting Washington Nationals at PNC Park, the Pittsburgh Pirates are 6-12, last in the National League Central. This home stand wraps up, beginning on Friday, as the Cleveland Guardians visit the “Steel City.”There’s no sugarcoating that the club is off to a rough start.
