In August 2023, New Zealand became one of the final countries to lift restrictions that had formed a part of their comprehensive response to the global coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, with mask-wearing no longer mandatory in their hospitals.1 This followed the great majority of countries lifting some of the most challenging restrictions on their citizens and international travel during 2022 and early 2023.
