Retire? I’ve never had much time to think about it. Way, way back in 1980 I was on my knees pinning up a new pair of suit pants for Billy Harris, owner of the Starkville (Miss.) Daily News, wondering how in the world I’d spend the rest of my life. Somehow the clothing business just wasn’t a good fit. We didn’t know it at the time, but Billy had the answer. Journalism. Harris offered me $25 to cover a high school football game for the local, family-owned paper back when $25 was a lot of money.

Phelps County and surrounding communities were treated to an outstanding performance of Irving Berlin’s iconic “White Christmas,” presented by the Missouri S&T Arts, Languages and Philosophy Department Thursday night at Leach Theatre. Directed by Taylor Gruenloh, assistant professor in theatre at S&T, audiences will be treated to “White Christmas” again 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and a matinee 2 p.m. Sunday.

Most people around here don’t remember much about Marvin Dinger. Heck, most of you probably never heard of him. But way back in the early 1970s, Dinger represented Dent County and the rest of the 129th district in the Missouri legislature. Dinger, from Ironton, served Dent, Iron and part of St. Francois County as a state representative. His final year of service was 1972. The district was shaped and re-shaped many times after that, but one thing remained the same.

There will be a lot of activities over the next few weeks to celebrate Veterans Day, observed Nov. 11. There will be parades, memorials in cemeteries, awards, recognitions, school programs and all sorts of things. Perhaps the largest and quickly becoming the most visible of Veterans Day observances around here is the Honoring Our Heroes Marathon, run between Salem and Rolla since 2016, the year it got off to a cold but windy start.

It’s 4:45 p.m.As I walked from the parking lot to the pass gate, the smell of something on the grill was delightful. Grilling and tailgating are a big part of college football. There were also the hum of a generator, and the closer I got to the stadium, music on the sound system got louder. The players warming up on the turf field appeared to like the music, as they hip-hop danced to the beat. It was a beautiful early October evening for football.

Decades before David Plank became one of the country’s best and most recognized bird artists, he was in an open field near his house sketching birds. He didn’t know why he liked sketching birds, he just knew he liked sketching birds. One of the neighborhood parents stood at a window watching the pre-teen Plank sketch and commented to his wife, “that boy will never amount to anything.”Years later, that comment was relayed to Plank, who still chuckles when he tells the story.
