Bob and Margaret Vickery acquired The Salem News in 1950, and their son, W. Ray Vickery, served as the publisher from 1983 until 1998. In 1998, Vickery passed ownership to his stepson, Donald Dodd. Our community-focused newspaper provides a diverse range of news, features, opinions, and sports coverage.

    The Salem High softball squad finished 2-2 in games played last week, all being high-scoring contests played in Salem. Salem opened the week by losing a 26-21 slugfest to Houston Monday, April 7 then defeated Dixon 20-9 Tuesday, April 8, knocked off Cabool 23-15 Thursday, April 10 and fell to East Carter 17-4 Friday, April 11. That left the Lady Tigers with a 7-5 mark. This week Salem was to play on the road at Willow Springs Monday, at Licking Tuesday and at Thayer Thursday (4:30 p.m. start).

    The Missouri House sent the state Senate a budget of almost $48 billion to fund state agency operations in the coming fiscal year, a spending plan almost certain to grow as the upper chamber adds more money for public schools and child care.     The Salem Tiger baseball squad improved is record to 3-0-1 overall with a pair of victories last week. Monday, March 24 the Tigers traveled to Steelville and posted an 8-4 victory. And Thursday, March 27 Salem hosted Ellington and won 7-3. This week Salem was slated to play at Owensville Monday, host the Licking Wildcats at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and travel to Potosi Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. start.

    The Salem High baseball squad opened the season by winning a game and tying a game in the Salem Early-Season Doubleheader, held Saturday, March 22 at the SHS Baseball Field. Salem doubled up Vienna 8-4 in its season-opener, then played to a 2-2 tie with Father Tolton Catholic in a game that was stopped after six innings due to the lights not working at the field. In the other games Saturday, Father Tolton beat Cuba 7-1 and Vienna topped Cuba 8-5.
