    The Grand Forks council will consider a liquor license for a new north side bar when they meet as a Committee of the Whole Monday night.  RG Investments is looking to locate in the old La Cantina site at 1730 13th Avenue North.  According to a staff report the business is seeking a beer/wine license and will be known as Cookie’s Lounge.  Preliminary plans call for a separate entrance to allow for a bakery to open next door as well.

    North Dakota’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in March remained unchanged at 2%.  Despite the low rate an estimated 10,817 people were in search of work last month. North Dakota ranked 1st among all states’ unemployment rates.  South Dakota came in 2nd at 2.1%. The national rate was 3.8%. Preliminary estimates indicate North Dakota’s March 2024 not seasonally adjusted employment increased 0.7 percent (+3,000) from the same period one year ago and increased 0.2 percent (+700) over the month.

    Charges have been filed against two men after a gunshot shattered the window of a vehicle on I-94 in Mandan this afternoon.  The North Dakota Patrol says a trooper heard a gunshot around 12:30 p.m. just east of exit 153 and observed the passenger side window of a car shatter.   Authorities say the trooper stopped the vehicle and detained two males without incident.  The NDHP says a loaded handgun was found inside the vehicle.  Both males were arrested for being felons in possession of a firearm.

    An ammonia leak at the JR Simplot plant on Friday prompted a brief shelter in place order for area residents. The Grand Forks Fire Department was notified on the incident around 7:30 p.m. When crews arrived on scene they were informed that all Simplot employees had evacuated safely. The leak was contained and the order was lifted around 9:00 p.m. There were no injuries.

    The Cass County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a fatal fire in rural Staples (MN) this morning. First responders arrived on scene shortly before 11:00 a.m. and found a residential structure engulfed in flames. Fire crews extinguished the blaze and located an adult male victim deceased inside the home. Two adult victims were transported to a hospital in Staples for treatment of smoke inhalation. The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family members.
