New GF bar and deer hunt

The Grand Forks council will consider a liquor license for a new north side bar when they meet as a Committee of the Whole Monday night. RG Investments is looking to locate in the old La Cantina site at 1730 13th Avenue North. According to a staff report the business is seeking a beer/wine license and will be known as Cookie’s Lounge. Preliminary plans call for a separate entrance to allow for a bakery to open next door as well.
ND’s March unemployment rate lowest in nation

North Dakota’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in March remained unchanged at 2%. Despite the low rate an estimated 10,817 people were in search of work last month. North Dakota ranked 1st among all states’ unemployment rates. South Dakota came in 2nd at 2.1%. The national rate was 3.8%. Preliminary estimates indicate North Dakota’s March 2024 not seasonally adjusted employment increased 0.7 percent (+3,000) from the same period one year ago and increased 0.2 percent (+700) over the month.
Gunshot fired in car on I-94

Charges have been filed against two men after a gunshot shattered the window of a vehicle on I-94 in Mandan this afternoon. The North Dakota Patrol says a trooper heard a gunshot around 12:30 p.m. just east of exit 153 and observed the passenger side window of a car shatter. Authorities say the trooper stopped the vehicle and detained two males without incident. The NDHP says a loaded handgun was found inside the vehicle. Both males were arrested for being felons in possession of a firearm.
Ammonia leak at Simplot cleared

An ammonia leak at the JR Simplot plant on Friday prompted a brief shelter in place order for area residents. The Grand Forks Fire Department was notified on the incident around 7:30 p.m. When crews arrived on scene they were informed that all Simplot employees had evacuated safely. The leak was contained and the order was lifted around 9:00 p.m. There were no injuries.
MN fire fatality under investigation

The Cass County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a fatal fire in rural Staples (MN) this morning. First responders arrived on scene shortly before 11:00 a.m. and found a residential structure engulfed in flames. Fire crews extinguished the blaze and located an adult male victim deceased inside the home. Two adult victims were transported to a hospital in Staples for treatment of smoke inhalation. The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family members.
ND petition would legalize recreational marijuana

A group of 27 North Dakotans have filed a petition to legalize adult-use cannabis in North Dakota. New Economic Frontier, the committee behind the ballot measure, says it would allow adults 21 and older to possess small amounts of cannabis and purchase products from registered cannabis establishments in North Dakota. To qualify for the November ballot, 15,582 signatures must be gathered from eligible North Dakota voters by July 8th.
Body of missing Bismarck man found

The body of a missing 81-year-old Bismarck man was found in rural Wells County Sunday by a farmer checking his fields. Lloyd Liken had been missing since November. Bismarck Police Detectives were notified of the discovery around 3:30 p.m. The farmstead is about 30 miles North of Steele. Liken was located near his vehicle deceased. He was last since driving Southbound on Highway 83 in the early morning hours on November 17th. Foul play is not suspected.
MN fatalities on the rise

Preliminary numbers show traffic fatalities are up more than 61 percent on Minnesota roads compared to the same time last year. The Minnesota Office of Traffic Safety says through April 10th the state has recorded 84 road deaths compared to 52 in 2023. “We need to get creative in how we’re combating the unacceptable driving behaviors and rising deaths we’re seeing on our roads,” said OTS Director Mike Hanson. “People are dying because drivers are selfishly making terrible choices.
UND receives $6.5 million donation

Sanford Health has donated $6.5 million to the University of North Dakota for scholarships and program support. UND says $2.5 million of the gift will fund three endowments that will receive a 50% match from the North Dakota Higher Education Challenge Grant Fund, a program created by the North Dakota Legislature to encourage giving to the state’s colleges and universities.
