ASHLAND – If ever there was a time for the Ashland High School track and field teams to blare House of Pain’s infamous hype song “Jump Around,” it might just be this week. Collectively, the Arrows will have three of the best jumpers in school history in action during the Division I state championships, including hurdler Jayden Goings, high jumper Frankie Rupsis and long jumper Dakota Kruty.

The high school career for one of the best runners in Ashland-area history will continue for another week. Loudonville senior and star distance runner Tess Shultz qualified to state in both the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs during the Division III regional track and field meet at North Royalton to lead a batch of local state qualifiers Friday. Shultz entered this spring season already committed to run at NCAA Division I Florida Gulf Coast University.

While the bulk of finals action in the high school track and field regional championships will take place Friday for local qualifiers, Wednesday’s Day 1 featured its share of big moments for Ashland-area standouts. In Division I competition at Port Clinton, Ashland junior Frankie Rupsis followed last week’s district title in the high jump with a regional crown, qualifying to state with a clearance of 5 feet, 4 inches.

Ask any of the Ashland High School senior’s coaches about his relentless energy and they might all have a unique recollection of his seemingly ceaseless stamina. For AHS track head coach and football defensive coordinator Ryan Stackhouse, one recent 24-hour stretch summed up Sauder perfectly.
