Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom ends the DCEU not with a bang, but with a whimper. I wasn't even that big of a fan of the first one, but at least the personality of James Wan showed a little more in that film. The action was kinetic and exciting, the horror elements were more prevalent, and the operatic sentimentality of his films benefited the simpler destiny narrative. All of those positive qualities are either gone or only show up in this sequel in flashes.

Wonka is neither the irresistible charm offensive that I had hoped it would be, nor the car crash disaster that it could've been. It's somewhere in the middle, cute and pleasant but somewhat forgettable. Paul King's direction is the film's best asset. The film doesn't really resemble Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory's sarcastic mean streak, but comes closer to the whimsy, over-the-top silliness of other Roald Dahl adaptations like Matilda and The BFG.

Imagine you're on a cruise and Godzilla crashes it. This is a genuine face-melter in all of the ways you want a Godzilla movie to be, pacing out the action perfectly, using the big guy's full scope of power in increasingly awesome punctuations. There's one action scene that evokes Jaws in all of the best ways possible, and it's not even a top three action moment in the entire film.

#63) THE AMATEUR (dir: James Hawes) Rami Malek mixes his Mr. Robot cybergenius persona with a working man's Jason Bourne. Strong supporting cast and CIA intrigue make this watchable and fairly entertaining, if definitely familiar. Full review coming for @TheDisInsider soon! https://t.co/UmnuUsB7MV
