OLYMPIA, Wash. — State employees, fearing budget cut layoffs and furloughs, made sure legislators heard their concerns Wednesday afternoon. Hundreds yelled and chanted “No cuts! No furloughs! Tax, tax the rich!” in the rotunda and outside of Gov. Bob Ferguson’s office. Ferguson proposed laying off 1,000 state employees, and requiring others to take unpaid days off, once a month for 24 months to help make up for what he believes could be a potential $16 billion deficit over the next four years.

OLYMPIA, Wash. — Democrats who hold the majority, and therefore write budget proposals in Olympia, proposed a list of new taxes and fees to make up for a multi-billion-dollar deficit. The proposals include new taxes on the state’s top 4,000 investment earners, and the largest banks and companies. Republican Minority Leader Drew Stokesbary (R-Auburn) said he is troubled by those proposals. Additional taxes would impact everyone in the state, he said.
