Istanbul-based singer-songwriter, artist and LGBTQI+ activist, Gaye Su Akyol is making her first visit to Leeds this weekend for a show at The Old Woollen in Farsley. Her short UK tour follows the release of her fourth album Anadolu Ejderi (Anatolian Dragon) which builds upon her mélange of Turkish psychedelia and empowered commentary. Ahead of the tour, she spoke to The Yorkshire Post.

A few hours after we speak, she will play the last of seven UK concerts in which she is one of the guest singers standing in for the late Shane MacGowan on the band’s tour marking the 40th anniversary of their album Rum, Sodomy and The Lash. Shah still sounds a little husky, though, from a lively show the night before at the O2 City Hall in Newcastle – which was very much home turf for the Whitburn-raised singer.

This month they intend to demonstrate it all over again when they head out on a national tour. Fronted by Glenn Gregory, singer in the Sheffield synth-pop group Heaven 17, their ranks also include lead guitarist James Stevenson and Visconti’s daughter Jessica Lee Morgan on vocals, saxophone and guitar, they visit the O2 Academy Leeds on Friday. Bass guitarist Visconti, who last month turned 81, tells The Yorkshire Post he is looking forward to it.

“I’ve actually never been to Leeds,” confesses the 24-year-old Londoner. “I’ve been to quite a few places up north...but it’s definitely been on my bucket list to go to Leeds because I know quite a lot of people at the Conservatoire as well.”It’s now five years since Stevenson’s trio emerged onto the UK jazz scene. As a boy, he had been inspired by his father’s eclectic tastes.
