A new play just opened at the Kumu Kahua Theatre in Honolulu. “The Golden Gays” by Ryan Okinaka is an homage to the long-running television show “The Golden Girls.”The show closes out the theater’s 54th season and arrives just in time for Pride Month. The Conversation sat down with the playwright, along with Elexis Draine, one of the actors in the show. Okinaka began by talking about how the idea for the play first came to him. Brian Daniel Moore and his wife, optometrist Dr. Lauren Mordue, opened Out to See and started a special line of eyeglass frames made by you. Ralph Gaston is part of Rusty's Hawaiian Coffee, a family business on the Big Island. Rusty is his father-in-law, who grows, roasts and distributes coffee. Gaston also runs Isla Custom Coffees, which finds markets in the U.S. and beyond for green coffee — the unroasted beans. He recently returned from a trade show in China and told HPR about how the tariffs are affecting coffee growers in Hawaiʻi.
