Today marks the second anniversary of the war in Sudan which has claimed more than 150,000 lives. The United Nations has called it the world's worst humanitarian crisis. Around 12 million people have been forced to flee their homes since the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and a powerful paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), began a vicious struggle for power in April 2023.
Judge says Enoch Burke behaving like 'unruly schoolboy'

A High Court judge has described Enoch Burke as behaving like an "unruly schoolboy" and awarded costs against him in proceedings over his unpaid fines. Gardaí had to remove Enoch Burke's mother Martina and sister Ammi Burke from the courtroom during today's proceedings.
Gardaí to work with Monaghan coroner to identify remains

An Garda Síochána has said it will work with the local coroner in Co Monaghan to correctly identify the human remains exhumed last year as part of the search for the burial place of Joe Lynskey. The Independent Commission for the Location of Victims' Remains (ICLVR) confirmed the human remains are not Mr Lynskey, who was abducted and murdered by the IRA more than 50 years ago.
Receiver appointed to collect fines from Burke's salary

The High Court has appointed a receiver to collect unpaid fines from the salary of Enoch Burke which amount to almost €80,000. An order was also granted to freeze Mr Burke's bank account to try and retrieve the money owed. Enoch Burke was not in court for the hearing today. His brother Isaac Burke was found in contempt of court for interrupting the judge during the hearing but purged his contempt minutes later by remaining silent as requested by Mr Justice David Nolan.
Locals 'horrified' as burst pipe leaks sewage onto beach

A burst pipe left leaking raw sewage onto a popular north Dublin beach for the last number of weeks has "horrified" local residents and swimmers. A build-up of human waste and toilet paper is clearly visible on part of the Burrow Beach in Sutton. Fingal County Council has said it is not responsible for the pipe, part of which runs along the surface of the sand, despite concerns around the raw sewage.
Over 1,000 gardaí to police St Patrick's events in Dublin

Over 1,000 gardaí will be on duty in Dublin city centre on St Patrick's Day and no alcohol will be sold by off-licenses until after the parade. Details of the policing plan for this year's event were unveiled in the Mansion House, with organisers and gardaí promising a "safe" and "family friendly event".
Special stamps launched to celebrate women in STEM

An Post has launched two special stamps to celebrate the achievements of Women in STEM in advance of International Women's Day this weekend. The stamps feature two pioneering Irish scientists, Professor Aoife McLysagh and Professor Jocelyn Bell Burnell, who are being honoured for their advocacy work for women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Astrophysicist Professor Bell Burnell discovered the first radio pulsars in 1967 when she was a PHD student at Cambridge University.
Extension to eligibility for Widow's, Widower's pensions

Government approval has been given to extend the eligibility for the Widow's and Widower's pension. It follows a Supreme Court ruling last year that the existing social welfare legislation was unconstitutional. Father of three, John O'Meara, from Nenagh, Co Tipperary took the action after he was refused the Widower's Pension because he was not married to his partner or in a civil partnership with her when she died.
More than 80,000 Muslims in Ireland preparing for Ramadan

More than 80,000 Muslims in Ireland are preparing to begin Ramadan tomorrow. They will fast from dawn until sunset until the end of March when they will celebrate with a day time feast called Eid al-Fitr. Ramadan is a celebration of when the Qur'an, the Muslim holy book, was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad and the exact dates change every year. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, which is based on the cycles of the moon.
