In an effort to measure the toll of xylazine among people with opioid use disorders, The Inquirer examined patient billing records for millions of people admitted to Pennsylvania hospitals between 2016 and 2023. Xylazine, a veterinary sedative not approved for humans, was detected in at least 90% of street opioids 2021.

The woman came to Samir Mehta’s clinic with a wound in her leg. The infection ran so deep and had destroyed so much soft tissue that Mehta thought he was dealing with an aggressive form of cancer. As the Penn Medicine orthopedic surgeon was removing infected flesh around the patient’s tibia — a process called debridement – he said the bone began to crumble at his touch, like “rotting wood that falls apart in your hands.”He decided the only option was to amputate.

Bailey McKenna had worked a year of landscaping jobs and weekend shifts at a local pub to earn the money for repairs to his dirt bike, paying his mechanic in installments. Finally, on Nov. 14, 2016, the 18-year-old high school senior from Northeast Philly’s Holmesburg section had the last of the cash in hand. Three teenage boys have been hospitalized following a shooting in Philadelphia’s Cedarbrook/Stenton neighborhood on Saturday afternoon. The gunfire took place just after 5 p.m., police said. The victims were taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center. One of the victims, an unidentified 15-year-old, is in critical condition, police said. The youngest, a 14-year-old boy, is in stable condition from a gunshot wound in his right thigh.
