The Emporia High girls swim and dive team finished third at the Topeka West Invitational on Wednesday. Emporia High finished with 323 points, finishing behind Manhattan and Seaman. Allie Weiss won the diving portion of the event with a score of 283.05, winning by 71 points. The 200-yard freestyle relay of Camryn Spafford, Ava Podrebarac, Taryn Woydziak and Brooke Monroe finished third (2:02.35).

Easter egg hunts are in abundance this weekend. Emporia Main Street kicks off the weekend with a nontraditional hunt starting at 10 am Friday. Director Casey Woods says 3-D printed eggs from the Fabrication Lab will be hidden along Commercial Street from Third to 12th. And yes, you can keep one if you find it.

For the first time this season, the Emporia High baseball team was swept in a doubleheader. Hayden, the No. 2-ranked team in Class 4A, defeated the No. 8 team in 5A, 14-0 in six innings and rallied for a 5-3 victory in the finale. The sweep kept the defending state champions in Class 3A undefeated with a 10-0 record. In game one, Emporia High recorded just one hit against Nebraska signee Cooper Grace.

Two Emporia High athletic teams were on the road on Tuesday. Emporia High junior Allie Weiss won the Campus Diving Invitational with a score of 460.80. Weiss will dive again on Wednesday at Topeka West, with the Lady Spartan swimmers competing following the diving portion of the meet. The Emporia High girls soccer team fell 7-1 at Manhattan. Katie Smart scored the lone goal for the Lady Spartans. Emporia High (4-3, 1-1 Centennial) hosts Wichita East at 6:15 p.m. Friday.

A major gift from the Preston Family Fund is set to benefit Southwick House. The $100,000 gift will be used to establish a welcoming porch at the new 9,000 square foot transitional housing facility at 115 E. Logan Ave and honor Aloha Preston. Executive Director Susan Brinkman says this gift passes a significant mark in the fundraising campaign. The Preston family’s priorities when living in Emporia were Emporia State University, women’s issues, and youth.
