Along with his first team selection as a pitcher, Ruge is a first team All-5A as a pitcher from the KABC.

    Northern Heights sophomore Ellei McCrory had a standout freshman season. Accolades included winning the Class 1A cross country championship and winning the 3,200m and 1,600m at the state track and field championships. Entering her sophomore year, she was destined to do it again. McCrory won the Lyon County League Championship last October; however, she finished third at state in cross country despite leading a majority of the race.

    Emporia High has its next girls basketball coach, and it’s a familiar leader to the program. Emporia High Athletics announced Wednesday that Bill Nienstedt has accepted an offer to be the next girls basketball coach for the 2025-26 season. Nienstedt’s hiring is pending board approval by the USD 253 Board of Education, which will next meet on June 11. Nienstedt guided the Lady Spartans for 12 seasons and stepped down in 2013 due to health issues.
