Emporia High girls swim and dive takes third at Topeka West

The Emporia High girls swim and dive team finished third at the Topeka West Invitational on Wednesday. Emporia High finished with 323 points, finishing behind Manhattan and Seaman. Allie Weiss won the diving portion of the event with a score of 283.05, winning by 71 points.┬áThe 200-yard freestyle relay of Camryn Spafford, Ava Podrebarac, Taryn Woydziak and Brooke Monroe finished third (2:02.35).
Easter egg hunts aplenty this weekend

Easter egg hunts are in abundance this weekend. Emporia Main Street kicks off the weekend with a nontraditional hunt starting at 10 am Friday. Director Casey Woods says 3-D printed eggs from the Fabrication Lab will be hidden along Commercial Street from Third to 12th. And yes, you can keep one if you find it.
Emporia High baseball swept by Hayden

For the first time this season, the Emporia High baseball team was swept in a doubleheader. Hayden, the No. 2-ranked team in Class 4A, defeated the No. 8 team in 5A, 14-0 in six innings and rallied for a 5-3 victory in the finale. The sweep kept the defending state champions in Class 3A undefeated with a 10-0 record. In game one, Emporia High recorded just one hit against Nebraska signee Cooper Grace.
Spartan Roundup: Allie Weiss wins Campus Invite; girls soccer falls at Manhattan

Two Emporia High athletic teams were on the road on Tuesday. Emporia High junior Allie Weiss won the Campus Diving Invitational with a score of 460.80. Weiss will dive again on Wednesday at Topeka West, with the Lady Spartan swimmers competing following the diving portion of the meet. The Emporia High girls soccer team fell 7-1 at Manhattan. Katie Smart scored the lone goal for the Lady Spartans. Emporia High (4-3, 1-1 Centennial) hosts Wichita East at 6:15 p.m. Friday.
Southwick House receives major gift from Preston Family Fund

A major gift from the Preston Family Fund is set to benefit Southwick House. The $100,000 gift will be used to establish a welcoming porch at the new 9,000 square foot transitional housing facility at 115 E. Logan Ave and honor Aloha Preston. Executive Director Susan Brinkman says this gift passes a significant mark in the fundraising campaign. The Preston family’s priorities when living in Emporia were Emporia State University, women’s issues, and youth.
2nd Civic Leadership Institute quickly approaching

After a successful Civic Leadership Institute in 2024, the 2025 edition is approaching. The eight-week institute will be held each Tuesday beginning on May 6 and run through July 8 with community members being able to connect with City of Emporia staff, getting behind the scenes tours and learning about the specifics of the city. With registration set to close next week, the class is above capacity, but applications are still being accepted.
Emporia High boys golf takes third at Manhattan

The Emporia High boys golf team finished third at the Manhattan Invitational on Monday. Emporia High shot a 326, finishing 22 strokes behind team champion Manhattan and five strokes behind runner-up Washburn Rural. Hudson Sauder finished third with a 77. Will Walker finished 12th with an 81. Jared Johnson was 15th with an 83. Nolan Jacob finished 22nd with an 85. Marley Harter finished 34th with an 89. Javen Arndt rounded out the lineup, finishing in a tie for 50th with a 96.
Emporia High baseball splits with Washburn Rural

The Emporia High baseball team had its winning streak snapped on Friday at Soden’s Grove against Washburn Rural. Emporia High extended its winning streak with a 2-1 walk-off victory in eight innings of game one, before Washburn Rural took the second game, 5-1. Game one was scoreless through six innings before Washburn Rural took a 1-0 lead in the seventh. The Spartans tied it with Madden Seidl scoring on an error.
Emporia High track and field girls take second, boys third at Lansing

The Emporia High track and field teams finished second and third at Lansing on Friday. On the girls side, the Lady Spartans had 135 points, 22 behind Leavenworth.Paige Newland led the way for the Lady Spartans with a pair of first place finishes and a third place finish. Newland won the long jump with a personal record 18-5.5 and the triple jump with a mark of 37-11. Newland finished third in the 100-meter hurdles (17.22). Jade Xu finished in a tie for second in the high jump (4-10).
Emporia High softball swept by Junction City; Barrett records 200th career strikeout

The Emporia High softball team was swept by Junction City on Friday, 10-0 and 7-1. In game one, the Blue Jays scored one in the first, four in the third and five in the fifth to win via run-rule. Emporia High was held to two hits in the game, one a triple from Ryane Howe. Alivia Barrett went 4.2 innings, allowing 10 runs on seven hits and six strikeouts. In game two, Junction City scored four in the first and never looked back. Emporia High got its lone run in the second on an error.
