One of the biggest single-day food drives in the country — the 32nd annual National Association of Letter Carriers "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive — is happening on May 11, and the need for participation is more urgent than ever. "Stamp Out Hunger" is an event that originated more than 40 years ago and now collects and distributes more than 60 to 70 million pounds of food annually, according to Jerry Brown, a spokesperson for St. Mary's Food Bank.

Purim, a Jewish holiday commemorating the salvation of Jewish people from a genocide in the ancient Persian empire, is Saturday. The holiday celebrates Esther, a biblical queen who saved the Jewish people from extermination at the hands of the antisemitic prime minister of Persia. Nowadays, the holiday is celebrated by giving gifts, helping the poor and having a feast. Jewish children dress up in costumes, often representing characters from the story of Esther.

A woman's dead body was found on the roof of an apartment building in downtown Phoenix on Monday. Sgt. Phil Krinsky, a spokesperson for Phoenix police, said officers were called to an apartment complex near 3rd and McKinley streets after 12 p.m. due to an unknown trouble call. When officers arrived, they were directed by a witness to the roof of a building where they found the woman's body. Her identity was not confirmed.

An improperly secured life jacket led to a California woman's drowning and death in Lake Havasu on Sunday, officials said. The Mohave County Sheriff's Office said that at 2 p.m., the office's Division of Boating Safety responded to an area near the Islander Resort about a potential drowning. Officials say the team learned on scene that a woman later identified as Cynthia Marin, a 49-year-old from La Mesa, California, had jumped off of a boat she was on to swim in the lake.

Rachel Dolezal, a former teacher at the Catalina Foothills School District in Tucson, was terminated on Tuesday after the district found out about the adult content she promoted on social media. Dolezal, who changed her legal name to Nkechi Diallo in 2016, was a former NAACP leader in Spokane, Washington, who faced national controversy for claiming to be Black despite being born to white parents.
