Arizona State baseball dealt with its fair share of adversity this past week, losing three of four games on its Midwest road trip and being walked off twice.

Men’s and Women’s Track and Field competed at the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, V.A., hosted by William & Mary over the weekend, picking up both team titles in the process. The Bison men scored 139.5 points, propelling them over Shippensburg and hosts William & Mary, while the women scored 149 points, ahead of second place Virginia’s 124.

PHOENIX — In the moments leading up to the start of the seventh inning, Arizona State senior right-handed pitcher Jack Martinez stepped onto the mound inside Phoenix Municipal Stadium looking to put his last frame of work behind him. He’d just given up three runs on three hits that ballooned Arizona’s lead from 2-0 to 5-0, and with an ASU offense that seemed lifeless for most of the night, a five-run deficit appeared a tall mountain to climb.

Instead, after just one batter, the maroon and gold ball club was down once again. Senior right-handed starter Jack Martinez started strong against the senior second baseman Garen Caulfield, the Wildcats’ leadoff batter, getting ahead 0-2, but the good start didn’t last.

After the handshake line, the ice cleared out and remained barren with the exception of graduate forward Artem Shlaine, who was taking a knee on the ice with his head locked into place and eyes fixated on the ice below him. Junior forward Tucker Ness hung out at ASU’s bench and allowed Shlaine to sit in his thoughts.

Likely playing with a fractured foot after blocking a shot in the first per head coach Greg Powers, his relentless forecheck forced Denver sophomore defenseman Garrett Brown into a turnover deep in the Pioneers’ defensive zone.

The BIG EAST knew they were getting four teams in the NCAA Tournament for sure with St.John’s, Creighton. Marquette and UConn as locks. But the league received a bonus when Xavier was tabbed as a fifth pick as it was picked to play in the First Four as an 11 seed against Texas in Dayton on Wednesday. St. John’s, fresh off its first BIG EAST Tournament championship in a quarter of a century, grabbed a No. 2 seed in the West Region and will face No. 15 Omaha in Providence on Thursday.

Towards the end of the press conference, Smolen was asked if the bigger stage added any pressure to a team that’s NCAA Tournament hopes depend on a deep conference tournament run. Expectedly, he asserted that it didn’t.
