Consider the numbers:340 miles of coastline970 miles of lake and river frontage15,000 campsites3,195 historic buildings11,000 known prehistoric and historic archeological sitesThese are some of the features that comprise California’s 280 state parks – enough to keep even the most ambitious among us exploring for a lifetime. Some parks are familiar, like Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, Carlsbad State Beach and Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. It’s likely that others are not so familiar.

Walking into the National Neon Sign Museum in historic downtown The Dalles, Ore., is to be transported to another age. Dozens of the glowing, glass-tube signs, so prevalent in this country from the 1920s through the 1950s, are on display throughout the venerable, Colonial-style Elks Building.

Traveling solo. Not something many of us will do — especially women. Who wants a table for one? What if you get lost? How do you stay safe? All these are challenges when you hit the road alone, but Paula Silverfarb is here to say that women can go where they want and do it by themselves.

Retire. Rocking chair. Rest in peace. That was the old order of things for those we call seniors. Today? It’s a whole new world. Seniors aren’t just spectators; they are part of the action. The definition of a senior? AARP, an organization that advocates for more than 100 million seniors, opens membership to those 50 years and older. As we head toward Walla Walla on this warm, late-September day, we see thousands of rows of trellises supporting millions of ready-for-picking apples. We learn that this growing method directs energy into the fruit rather than a trunk, and it also makes for easier harvesting. No tall ladders and no fighting thick branches.

An afternoon at the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach. What a jewel. The building alone is a work of art, but inside, exhibit is both fun and provocative. love this Dungeness crab/Volkswagen beetle hybrid. Less than 90 min from Oceanside. @VisitLB @molaa
