This friend-or-foe business is elastic, historically, but the cracks in the relationships are evident, and chaos these days is a given. I do not know what month it is. Mothers got a day last weekend and football season opens on Sept. 4 — Dallas and Philadelphia on NBC, a Thursday night classic even though it hasn’t been played yet and everyone who gets an NBC paycheck is excited — but somehow Black History Month, Woman’s History Month and Asian and Pacific Islands History Month blew past me. Also, dates — or is it months? – recognizing Hindu and Muslim contributions to America.

The various models of electric cars and one weird-looking pickup truck manufactured by Tesla Inc. are excellent, if a little overpriced. Sales are down lately, though, but it has nothing to do with the quality of the cars, the dealer network or even the competition.

Newspapers publish editorial columns in print and online, such as the one you’re reading now. The better papers often offer a place, online, for readers to offer comments, and those comments are sometimes trailed by the writer of the column, who responds to them. Those comments tend to be the source of what the columnist did not offer in his or her writing. Those comments by readers tend to be fascinating.
