The various models of electric cars and one weird-looking pickup truck manufactured by Tesla Inc. are excellent, if a little overpriced. Sales are down lately, though, but it has nothing to do with the quality of the cars, the dealer network or even the competition.

Newspapers publish editorial columns in print and online, such as the one you’re reading now. The better papers often offer a place, online, for readers to offer comments, and those comments are sometimes trailed by the writer of the column, who responds to them. Those comments tend to be the source of what the columnist did not offer in his or her writing. Those comments by readers tend to be fascinating.

Ah, hearkening back to yesteryear, and memories of a simpler time, when we wore masks to keep from inhaling a pandemic. Back when Congressional inaction over funding the government was a big deal and a page-one news story. We watched a sideways ship in the Suez Canal clog the world economy and heard Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s opinion of beer. I thought the versatile George Santos would have his own talk show by now. Whatever happened to him?

Oh, let’s see here. Gunfire at “street parties.” California’s on fire. Houston’s underwater. Ukrainian hospitals are bombed. The Yankees are struggling. Seems like all of that qualifies as a typical summer these days, except that Donald Trump has temporarily reduced the velocity of his mouth but, hey, if your opponent is digging a hole for himself, you don’t take away his shovel, right? My personal travail concerns the heat and humidity, and I am impressed by how those not me are handling it.

I sense the reason anyone “reads the news” is not to stay informed but to see how things turn out. Like a thousand plays or movies or sitcoms, we employ the media to learn what’s happening – “Congress to vote on Ukraine aid package” is an establishing come-on the way TV Guide would inform “Tony and Angela clash over furniture” in a blurb about the television show “Who’s the Boss?” Then, if you care, you wait to learn what happened.
